When is Black Friday, and when is Cyber Monday?
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, and federal law fixes Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday of November. That pins Black Friday to a date from November 23 to November 29, and it pins the rest of the long weekend with it:

Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving, so it slips into December in years with a late Thanksgiving, such as 2030 and 2031. The dates table on this page pairs each of the next five Black Fridays with its Cyber Monday.
Days from Black Friday to Christmas
Christmas stays on December 25 while Black Friday moves, so the shopping stretch between them changes length. An early Black Friday on November 23 leaves 32 days until Christmas; a late one on November 29 leaves 26. The Christmas countdown clock takes over once the sales weekend is past.
Black Friday sale times across time zones
A store’s start time is set in the store’s zone, not yours. A sale that opens at 12:00 AM Eastern Time on Friday is already live at 9:00 PM on Thursday in Pacific Time. Check which zone a retailer names before you count down to it.
Why is it called Black Friday?
The shopping name most likely began in Philadelphia in the 1960s or 1970s, where it described the heavy traffic on the day after Thanksgiving. A 2009 Library of Congress article on advertising history traces it there, while noting that the exact origin is uncertain. The popular story that stores move from red ink to black ink that day is a myth, the same article says.
The phrase is older than the shopping day. Friday, September 24, 1869, became known as Black Friday after an attempt by Jay Gould and Jim Fisk to corner the gold market collapsed. Gold had climbed from $143 to $162 before the Treasury sold gold and the price crashed to $135.

Frequently asked questions
Is Black Friday a federal holiday?
No. Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) gives the day off for Thanksgiving, the Thursday, and not for the Friday after it, so your employer decides whether Black Friday is a workday.
