Daylight saving time starts at 2:00 AM local time on the second Sunday in March and ends at 2:00 AM local time on the first Sunday in November. Each date comes from that federal rule, so every period lasts exactly 34 weeks (238 days).

When does daylight saving time end in 2026?
Federal law puts the end of daylight saving time (DST) on the first Sunday in November, so it always lands between November 1 and November 7. In 2026, it ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Counted from Sunday, March 8, 2026, the period lasts 238 days, exactly 34 weeks, as it does every year. Most people call it daylight savings time; the law’s name has no s.
You gain an hour that night. At 2:00 AM daylight time the clock goes back to 1:00 AM, so the hour from 1:00 to 1:59 AM happens twice and the night lasts 25 hours. Phones and computers on automatic time switch by themselves. Oven, car and wall clocks need setting back 1 hour, most easily before bed on Saturday.
When does daylight saving time start again?
Daylight saving time next starts at 2:00 AM local time on Sunday, March 14, 2027, when clocks spring forward 1 hour to 3:00 AM. The start is always the second Sunday in March, between March 8 and March 14.
That night the clock jumps from 1:59 AM straight to 3:00 AM, so the day lasts 23 hours. Sunrise and sunset both move 1 hour later by the clock, which shifts an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening until November.
When is time change day in each U.S. time zone?
Time change day is always a Sunday, but each zone switches at its own 2:00 AM, so the change sweeps west over 5 hours. Eastern time goes first and the Aleutian Islands of Alaska go last. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the world reference clock, has no daylight saving time, so it shows the order:

Which states do not observe daylight saving time?
Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time, and neither do American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona is the exception inside Arizona: it does change its clocks.
A state can stay on standard time all year by passing a state law. It cannot adopt permanent daylight saving time on its own: the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), which oversees time zones, says states do not have that authority.

Why does daylight saving time end on the first Sunday in November?
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 moved the end 1 week later, from the last Sunday in October, and the change took effect in 2007. Daylight saving time first came to the United States in 1918; three federal laws set today’s schedule.

What happens to shifts and timers on a change night?
A span that crosses 2:00 AM on the November change night is 1 hour longer than its clock readings suggest, and one across the March change is 1 hour shorter.

A weekly time card total that subtracts clock readings misses that hour, so add or remove it by hand for the one night. The time duration calculator measures real elapsed time when you enter dates, and the countdown to midnight shows 25 hours left at 12:00 AM on the November change day.
Will daylight saving time become permanent?
Not yet. As of October 21, 2026, no law makes it permanent, so clocks still change twice a year. The House passed the Sunshine Protection Act (H.R. 139) on July 14, 2026, by 308 to 117, in roll call vote 238. The Senate received it on July 15, 2026, and sent it to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, where it has not had a vote.
The bill would make daylight saving time the new, permanent standard time. States with areas exempt from daylight saving time, such as Hawaii and most of Arizona, could choose which standard time those areas use.
An earlier version passed the Senate by unanimous consent on March 15, 2022. The House never voted on it, and it expired when that Congress ended in January 2023.
Frequently asked questions
Is it daylight saving time or daylight savings time?
The official name is daylight saving time, singular, as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the U.S. Department of Transportation write it. "Daylight savings time" is the more common spoken form, and both mean the same March-to-November schedule.
Does the UK change its clocks on the same day as the U.S.?
No. The UK sets its clocks back on the last Sunday in October, always 1 week before the U.S. change. It sets them forward on the last Sunday in March, 2 or 3 weeks after the U.S. change.
