Why the countdown is 1 day more than the days left in the year
New Year’s Day is the finish line, so this count always runs one higher than the days left this year, which stop at December 31. The “Days until New Year’s Eve” figure under the clock is that days-left number. December 31 is day number 365 in a common year and 366 in a leap year.

Is New Year’s Eve a holiday?
New Year’s Day, January 1, is a federal holiday under 5 U.S.C. 6103, and it was one of the four holidays in the first federal holiday law in 1870. New Year’s Eve is not, with one exception: when January 1 falls on a Saturday, most federal employees get Friday, December 31, off instead. That happens next on December 31, 2027, ahead of New Year’s Day 2028.
A Sunday New Year’s Day moves the day off to Monday, January 2, as it will in 2034. Each row of the dates table on this page shows which weekday federal workers get off that year.
Hitting midnight on the second
A phone or laptop can drift from the official time, and this clock drifts with it. Before the last minute, compare it with time.gov, the official U.S. time site run by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The new year begins at 12:00 AM, written 00:00 on a 24-hour clock, and the last minute of the old year is 11:59 PM, or 23:59.
For the final hours of New Year’s Eve, or any other night, the time left until midnight gives the same finish in hours, minutes and seconds. The Christmas countdown covers the holiday a week earlier.
