Christmas falls on December 25. The date stays the same every year, so only the day of the week changes.

How many days until Christmas Eve, and how many sleeps until Christmas?
Christmas Eve sits one calendar day before December 25, so its count always runs one lower than the Christmas count. Sleeps follow the Christmas count instead: a child going to bed on Christmas Eve has one sleep left, and each night before that adds one.

Is Christmas Eve a federal holiday?
No. The federal holiday list in 5 U.S.C. 6103 names Christmas Day, December 25, but not December 24. Christmas has been on that list since the first federal holiday law, passed on June 28, 1870.
Federal offices can still close on Christmas Eve in two ways:
Christmas falls on a Saturday. The holiday is then observed on Friday, December 24, as it will be in 2027.
The President orders a closure. Executive Order 14129 closed executive agencies on December 24, 2024, and Executive Order 14371 closed them on December 24 and December 26, 2025.
When Christmas falls on a Sunday, the day off moves to Monday, December 26. The dates table on this page lists the federal day off for each of the next five Christmases. Private employers and schools set their own Christmas Eve hours.
Weekends and business days before Christmas
Business days left before Christmas skip weekends and any federal holiday still ahead. Before November 11, that takes out both Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. From December 1 onward, no federal holiday remains before Christmas, so only weekends come out: Tuesday, December 1, 2026, leaves 17 business days and 3 weekends.
A Saturday Christmas changes the last workday. In 2027, Friday, December 24, is the observed holiday, so the final business day before Christmas is Thursday, December 23.
Multiply the calendar days left by 24, then take off the hours already gone today. At 6:00 PM on December 20, that is 5 × 24 − 18 = 102 hours, and the "Hours to go" figure keeps that total live.
Is the day after Christmas a holiday?
No, not under federal law, except as the observed day off when Christmas falls on a Sunday, as it next does in 2033. Executive Order 14371 also closed federal offices on Friday, December 26, 2025.
